Fire-retardant structural protection mat for flat roofs

Flat roofs in general have become increasingly important in recent years. This has been driven not least by developments in the housing market to utilise even more living space. The flat roof must be flame-retardant, e.g. with a structural protection mat.

Flat roofs in general, whether they are used as balconies, terraces or for photovoltaic modules, have become increasingly important in recent years. This has been driven not least by developments in the housing market, in order to optimise the use of even more living space in times of housing shortages.

In general, roofs are one of, if not the most important part of a house. Consequently, care must be taken at the planning stage to ensure that the fire load on roofs is as low as possible. Even in the case of refurbishment, techniques and systems should be used that emphasise this.

The provisions of building law serve to protect the life and limb of people, animals and property and to ensure the safety of the general public. The measures of preventive structural fire protection essentially pursue four objectives:

  • Preventing the outbreak of fire
  • Preventing the spread of fire
  • Rescue people and animals in the event of fire
    to enable effective extinguishing work

The facts

Resistance to flying sparks and radiant heat is required for roof coverings. Roof structures must be sufficiently resistant to external fire exposure, this is referred to as "hard roofing".

This fire protection requirement must be met not only by the waterproofing, but also by the entire system structure. This "hard roofing" is implemented either in accordance with DIN 4102-7 or TS 1187 (technical specification) in conjunction with DIN EN 13501-5.

The solution

KRAITEC® top FiRe - the flame-retardant structural protection mat

Equipped with a flame-retardant finish, the KRAITEC® top FiRe structural protection mat made of rubber granulate makes a significant contribution to reducing the fire load on flat roofs many times over. Classified by Broof s1 as "hard roofing" and Bfl s1 as flame-retardant, it meets all the requirements to ensure both excellent structural protection and to support a fire protection concept to minimise the fire load in the system.

This also means that it is no longer necessary to cover the mat with mineral building materials for fire safety. Fixing by means of gravel fill, concrete slabs or similar remains in a reduced form to ensure positional stability and prevent lifting in the event of wind suction. This also allows the load on the flat roofs to be minimised many times over, which contributes significantly to static relief.

KRAITEC® top FiRe can be used over the entire surface as well as in the form of pads and strips on flat and green roofs, terraces, balconies, loggias, arcades and car park decks as well as under solar and photovoltaic modules.
